 I've ridden with radar detectors on my bike for years. I used a Valentine One for a long time, and then switched to Escort. These top-of-the-line automotive detectors offered the performance I wanted, but physically they were not well suited to the motorcycle environment. Neither handles rain well at all so they need a good, tight rain cover. Both have displays on the front edge of the detector, which works OK on some bikes but can be very difficult to see on many motorcycles (particularly sportier bikes). And simply knowing that the detector is going off requires the addition of a lot of extra hardware from third parties.
There have been attempts at motorcycle detectors before. Whistler's Crusader system was an absolute mish-mash of ideas, requiring extensive installation and offering very little other than weather resistance in real useful features for motorcyclists. I have a box of them on a shelf in my office that I refused to put on our Web site after trying one out on my own bike. About a year ago I saw a prototype detector from a new company called Adaptiv Technologies. They were showing the product at a powersports trade show, and gathering feedback from the attendees. I liked the size and shape, and the concept of a wireless helmet speaker works well for some riders, but their mounts were still very rough and they still had work to do on the alert options. Adaptiv took the information and opinions that they got from me and all the other attendees at that show, and went back to the drawing board. The end result is the new Adaptiv TPX, and I think they have a real winner. The detector itself is about the size of many other detectors, but the physical layout is designed with motorcyclists in mind. Of course the detector is weatherproof. The buttons are large, easy to use with gloves, and placed on top of the detector where they'll be most visible to a rider. The display is also on top, canted back toward the rider. This will be especially useful for sportbikes, where the detector will tend to reside just below and ahead of the rider's helmet. The buttons and display have a backlight you can turn on if you wish.
The TPX detector's alerts can be passed to the rider in a variety of ways. The super-bright LED visual alert is included, and there are several audio options. You can get the wireless helmet speaker, or if you have a touring bike like a Honda Gold Wing, we even have interfaces in development that will tie the alert audio into your existing sound system. Adaptiv doesn't try to shoe-horn you into their way of seeing or hearing alerts, instead they give you a variety of choices so that you can pick the method that suits your needs the best. As for mounting the detector, Adaptiv makes a variety of mounts that will fit most bikes, or you can just get an adapter plate that allows you to use RAM, Tech Mounts, or just about any other solution. Again, you can decide how it's done - you're not limited to a small range of options.
I'm very excited to be able to offer a quality product like this that is designed with motorcycle users in mind first and foremost. Touring motorcyclists are becoming a larger consumer group every year, and it's gratifying to see that manufacturers are starting to recognize this and respond with specific solutions for us. |

The detector itself is just 1/3 of the problem. The 2nd part is, how do you know it's going off? Third part, how do you mount it? Adaptiv Technologies has addressed those issues as well.
And lest you worry that the performance is sub-par as compared to Escorts and Valentines, rest assured. Adaptiv has submitted the TPX to independent testing from Speed Measurement Labs Inc., and has received full certification that it performs as advertised.
